An opportunity almost missed

Richa Chadda is back in the game with Fukrey, impressing the fans and the critics, but as Bollywood Hungama’s Joginder Tuteja reports, it was a shot at a great movie that almost never happened for her…
It has been pretty much a Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (sometimes joy, sometimes sorrow) scenario for Richa Chadda.
After gaining accolades for her performance in Gangs of Wasseypur, Richa was flying high, and was further thrilled when none other than Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani roped her in for Fukrey.
However, she almost missed an opportunity to be a part of the film, courtesy of a mystery man who was hell bent on sabotaging her stint with Bollywood.
“When Richa was initially offered Fukrey, she was really excited. After all, she was getting to play the pivotal part of a female goon in this Delhi-based film. Just when everything was about to be finalised, an industry insider dissuaded her from doing the film. He insinuated that the part was way too small and inconsequential for her. Since Richa trusted him blindly, she went ahead and rejected the film,” our source said.
This decision not to do the film shocked the powers that be at Excel and the casting director.
He had recommended Richa to Farhan and Ritesh and this refusal came out of the blue.
“Meanwhile Richa, who is still learning the game of Bollywood, was further led to believe that the film’s script too was weak and it would be good for her to stay away.
“Pretty gullible at that stage of her career, Richa confessed to her inner circle that she was ‘wounded’ to find a premium production house like Excel choosing her for a walk over part. She just forgot all about the film and moved on,” the source adds.
However, to her good fortune, those in the know asked her to give the film a second thought and made her realise what she was missing out on.
“On further probing, Richa realised it wasn’t a small part after all and instead was quite pivotal to the film’s narrative. She felt it was quite foolish on her part to have said ‘no’ after accepting the offer. She promptly approached the director, Mrigdeep.
“He understood the predicament she had been in and brought her back into the film with no questions asked.”
When contacted, Richa didn’t deny the story.
“See, people come with their agendas. I guess the person who told me the role was not good probably wanted his own girlfriend, sister or mother to get in there,” says Richa.
“I know the entire story now, but what’s the point? I just went back to Excel instead of going to this guy and telling him: ‘Hey… I know what you did’.
“It was a good experience though, and has made me wiser. I now know not to trust someone blindly.”
As expected, she refused to share the identity of the person involved.
